Global surgery is a field of research, practice and advocacy, prioritising underserved populations world wide, with a goal of achieving equity in health. It involves all surgical specialities and anaesthesia. By tradition, surgery has been considered costly and of little importance to population health. As a consequence, surgery has not been a priority on the global health agenda. It has even been called the neglected stepchild in global health. Contrary to previous beliefs, a third of the global burden of disease is caused by conditions amenable to surgery but five billion people lack access to high quality surgery at an affordable cost when needed.
This is something that students, medical practitioners and decision makers are not aware of. Today, patients come from all corners of the world with resulting implications for disease epidemiology and needs for flexible health care systems even in high income countries. Therefore, knowledge about global surgery is not only important for those involved in work and research in low resourced settings – it is also important to anyone interacting with patients from such backgounds.
The Nordic Countries have taken on leading roles within the global surgery movement. This will be the third Nordic Global Surgery meeting. By participating in this meeting, you will gain insight into several aspects of the field of global surgery. You will be able to meet and interact with professionals within surgery and anaesthesia from all over the world. We anticipate a progressive meeting where clinical and scientific partnerships of the future will form.

Dr Löfgren works in plastic surgery. Scientifically, she works with clinical research, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa. She is one of the co-founders of the elective course in Global Surgery for medical students at KI.
Tomas Gustafsson, MD PhD
Dr Gustafsson is a resident MD in infectious disease medicine and a junior group leader at the department of Clinical Microbiology, Umeå University, Umeå. Dr. Gustafssons research interests lie primarily in the fields of antibiotic development and clinical infectious disease medicine.
Dr Roy is a consultant vascular surgeon and an associate professor in surgery focusing on vascular surgery mainly in Sweden but also in Uganda. He is one of the co-founders of the elective course in Global Surgery for medical students at KI.
Dr Sinabulya is a general surgeon, subspecialising in vascular surgery. Her research is mainly related to vascular surgery, in Sweden and in Uganda. She is one of the co-founders of the elective course in Global Surgery for medical students at KI

Given the success of the two earlier Swedish Diabetes Summit in Lund and Gothenburg, we are now very pleased to invite you to Stockholm and Karolinska Institutet for the third Swedish symposium on diabetes related research. We have an exciting program with several recognized speakers representing 7 different Swedish universities and many international guests.
This symposium is targeted to Swedish academic and industrial researchers performing both preclinical and/or clinical research within diabetes. Clinically active medical doctors/health care personnel and patient organization representatives could also benefit from the meeting.
Registration is open until October 7, 2018
Participants are very welcome to present posters! Deadline to submit abstracts is September 23. There will be a dedicated poster session in the evening of Thursday 15th of November during the buffet dinner when posters are to be presented.
